Enter the 2008 Readers as Writers Contest

The Key Newspaper wants you to enter its annual Readers as Writers (RAW) Contest. You may enter if you are an adult student enrolled in a Wisconsin Basic Skills, GED/HSED, Adult High School, or English as a Second Language class or tutoring program. Students in adult literacy programs at correctional institutions are included.

Entries can be stories, poems, opinion writing, song lyrics, raps or journal entries of up to two typewritten pages. Use an assignment from an instructor or enter something you have written on your own. You may submit two entries, but each must be in a different category or genre (jan-rah).

Entries must be family friendly
All work must be original and appropriate for family reading. Entries that contain profanity, sexual themes or that glorify violence or illegal activities will not be judged.

The deadline for all entries is March 14th, 2008. Each entry must include your name, home address, literacy program and location and instructor's name clearly at the top of each page. Put your name and instructor's name on the second page. You will find the 2008 entry form on The Key Web site at www.keynews.org. Also, copies will be sent to instructors at all literacy programs on The Key mailing list.

We ask that teachers and tutors send all entries. We also ask that they review and approve all submitted work before sending it out. Submit entries on a computer diskette or by e-mail as a Word attachment to balistrv@matc.edu. Please put RAW Entry in the subject line.

An awards ceremony will be held May 6th at the Milwaukee Public Library.

Contest sponsors include The Key, Journal Communications, Inc., The Milwaukee Public Library, Milwaukee Area Technical College, and the Wisconsin Technical College System Board.
