Activity #1:  Read the article entitled “Steps You Can Take to Avoid Catching the Flu”.

Before answering go to www.rlrouse.com/flu.html and read for additional information.

1.     Why do you think a person should cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze?

2.     Why do you think all used tissue should go into the wastebasket?

3.     Why do you think a child’s toys should be washed if they are sick?

4.     If I wanted to make a virus-killing solution and all I had to measure was a coffee cup, how much bleach and water should I use? 

5.     If I wanted to make a virus-killing solution and I used a ½ cup measuring cup how many cups total liquid would I have once I mixed the bleach and water?

 

Activity #2:  Read the article entitled “Flu Vaccine Shortage Causes Problems”.

1.     How do you feel about paragraph 3?  Do you think the British government was right?

2.     Go to www.census.gov/cgi-bin/popclock.  How many million Americans will flu shots not be available to?

3.     What are some flu symptoms?

4.     Why do you think the federal government has recommended only certain people get the vaccine?

5.     Why do you think the federal government chose the groups of people they did to recommend they get flu shots?

 

Activity #3:  Read the article entitled “Remember it’s Not the Cost, but the Thought that Counts”

1.     What is a synonym for the word frugal?

2.     Why would making a gift list in advance be helpful?

3.     Why should you carry the list with you?

4.     Why is buying lightweight items that you intend to mail a good idea?

5.     Why should you mail gifts early?

6.     Why should you watch the scanner at the store when shopping?

7.     If a person set up a Holiday gift fund in January and put in $45.00 a month, how much money would that person have by the end of December?

8.     What type of homemade gifts do you think would be nice to receive and/or give?

 

Activity #4:  Read the article entitled “Pumpkin Pie is America’s Favorite Thanksgiving

Dessert”.

1.     What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?

2.     If time and cooking ability were not a factor, what would be on your “dream” Thanksgiving menu?

3.     If a cook wanted to make two pumpkin pies, how much sugar would need to be used?

4.     How much sugar would be needed for three pies?

5.     If three pies were to be made, how many ounces of Pure Pumpkin would be used?

 

Activity #5:  Read the article entitled “Red Sox Win World Series to End “Curse”.

4.     Where would/do you receive most calls?

5.     How much would/does your monthly budget allow for a cell phone?

6.     Go to www.dogpile.com and look up a web site that advises the consumer or compares wireless plans; take your answers to questions 1-5 and see what plan might be the best for your needs.  Try to choose a site that is run by an independent source.

3.     Why do you think Feingold won by a larger margin this election than his first two elections?

4.     Why do you think such a high percent of eligible voters voted this year?

5.     What is Gwen Moore’s position on the war? Explain your answer.
