Through a longtime partnership, the Liberty City and Key Biscayne communities joined forces to help a delegation of young men attend the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Rising! conference in Oakland, CA from February 19-20, 2019.
The Obama Foundation is hosting MBK Rising!, a gathering of young people from the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, and cross-sector leaders from across the nation to mark progress, share what’s working, highlight innovations, and discuss challenges. The inaugural event’s speakers include Steph Curry, John Legend, Michael B. Jordan, and of course, the former President.
Former Miami Children’s Initiative CEO and current MBK Network and Partnerships Manager, Cecilia Gutierrez, recently met President Obama. In a literal elevator pitch, she asked the President to meet with the youth from Liberty City who were so inspired by him and his presidency. After the chance encounter, a delegation from Liberty City was invited to attend the MBK Rising! gathering. Gutierrez then asked long-time ally and Key Biscayne Police Chief, Charles Press, to lead the Liberty City youth on this journey.
The youthful delegation and their chaperones made the journey with the support of Key Biscayne residents through the Chief Press Foundation which helped raise the funds for flights and hotels. The delegation is still accepting donations to cover remaining travel expenses via their GoFundMe page.
